The Palmetto Trades Foundation is 501 (c)(3) nonprofit providing scholarships for Building Construction Cate Completion, high school graduates. The scholarships are unique in that they can be used for a trade school or to purchase tools and equipment, should that student choose to enter a career in the trades directly out of high school.

About the Palmetto Trades Foundation

Who Are We?

We are educators, members of the workforce, people who understand that working in the trades can be a fulfilling career. We are looking to help connect competent workers to good, quality, skilled trades careers.

When did we start?

Starting this year, 2026, we will hand out our first scholarships to two Spring Valley High School students. We were able to do this with a generous donation from Peter Protopapas.

Where are we located?

This year we intend to start in the R2 school district and expand each year until we reach the goal of providing scholarships for every Building Construction Cate Completer in the state of South Carolina

Why are we doing this?

We genuinely care about the future of skilled trades. There is a decline in worker quality and local builders express concerns about work ethic. While college is emphasized, not every student is suited for that path. Those who take pride in their trade can build successful careers without the burden of student loans.

How are we going to do it?

We will connect construction industry leaders with high school Building Construction educators to help identify and support students with strong potential in the skilled trades. Through these partnerships, we help provide the guidance, mentorship, and opportunities students need to succeed.

Why Skilled Trades Matter

America faces a growing shortage of skilled workers. At the same time, many talented students are encouraged toward college paths that may not fit their strengths or goals.

We believe students should have options.

A career in the trades can provide:

  • Financial stability

  • Job security

  • Career advancement

  • Business ownership opportunities

  • Pride in building something that lasts
